The first THESEUS Workshop in Nordland was organized as part of WP9 – Synergies, Replication and Cooperation of Theseus, where Kunnskapsparken Helgeland AS (KPH) focuses on identifying new Industrial Symbiosis (IS) / Industrial-Urban Symbiosis (IUS) cases in Nordland, Norway. The aim was to identify new synergies in the region through thematic workshops. This was the first of a series of such workshops to be held.
Organizing Theseus Partners: Kunnskapsparken Helgeland AS (KPH) (through Arctic Cluster Team (ACT)), SINTEF Helgeland, Nordland fylkeskommune (NFK)
The workshop gathered more than 20 participants, representing a broad mix of sectors:
– Hydrogen sector: All major hydrogen producers active in the region
– Process industries: Key industries from Nordland’s strong process industry sector
– Bio-sector: Companies from fisheries, aquaculture, and the Norwegian Seaweed Cluster
– Biogas startups: Early-stage companies exploring innovative bio-based energy solutions
Research organizations:
SINTEF Helgeland and Nordlandsforskning (Nordland Research Institute)
Enabling organizations: Arctic Cluster Team (ACT), Kunnskapsparken Helgeland AS, and public sector actors
The workshop was facilitated by Murat Mirata, expert in industrial symbiosis, Associate Professor from Linköping University. Murat opened the session with an introductory presentation, examples of successful industrial symbiosis implementations, and guided the participants through interactive group work. Using miro boards, participants mapped value chains, identified synergies, and discussed potential resource exchanges. The diverse composition of participants created good discussions and encouraged cross-sector dialogue.
Official Recognition:
The event was accepted as an official EU Green Week Partner Event, contributing to the visibility of the event and Theseus at the European level.
On the same day the workshop was preceded by the launch of the Sirkulære Nordland report, presented by Nordland fylkeskommune (associated Partner in Theseus), Innovation Norway, and EY. The report provided regional context on industrial symbiosis potential in Nordland’s power-intensive and marine industries.
Key Outcomes:
– 4 concrete industrial symbiosis cases were identified during the workshop.
– Follow-up activities and meetings have been initiated to further develop at least 3 of these cases.
– The workshop created a foundation for continued dialogue, networking, and development of new IS/IUS cases in Nordland within the Theseus framework.
Stay tuned for more IS/IUS developments from Theseus WP9 in Nordland and beyond!
