THESEUS collaborates with United Circles, its Horizon Europe sister project, to strengthen knowledge exchange around Industrial-Urban Symbiosis, circular value chains and regional Hubs for Circularity across Europe.

United Circles

United Circles

Networked industrial-urban symbiosis value-chain demonstrators for biomaterials, C&DW, circular water loops and WWTPs, driven by Hubs 4 Circularity.

United Circles shares with THESEUS the common goal of supporting the transition of cities and industries toward circular, low-carbon ecosystems, focusing on the practical implementation of industrial-urban symbiosis (I-US) to turn urban waste into valuable resources.

Major waste streams

Three urban waste streams

United Circles develops and demonstrates innovative solutions to transform three high-impact waste streams into new value chains.

Stream 01

Construction & demolition waste

Recovered and upcycled into low-carbon building materials for a circular construction sector.

Stream 02

Urban & industrial wastewater

Treatment plants reimagined as resource-recovery centres for water, energy and nutrients.

Stream 03

Food waste & used cooking oil

Converted into fully biodegradable bioplastics as a sustainable alternative to fossil plastics.

Flagship innovations

Demonstrations that show how urban waste streams can be transformed into high-value materials and products.

3D-printed circular building

A two-storey building 3D-printed from construction waste, using low-carbon cement and upcycled materials.

Resource-recovery WWTPs

Wastewater plants producing clean water, biomethane, fertilisers and recycled cellulose for industrial use.

Bioplastics from cooking oil

Used cooking oil converted into fully biodegradable bioplastics, replacing fossil-fuel-based plastics.

Regional Circularity Hubs (H4C)

Platforms for collaboration among industries, municipalities, researchers and citizens, supporting governance, investment and knowledge sharing.

Complementary by design

The complementarity with THESEUS lies in the different but reinforcing project scopes.

THESEUS focus

THESEUS establishes Greece’s first H4C from the Attica region, validating circular solutions for materials, water and energy, supported by digital and robotic technologies, governance models and replication activities.

United Circles focus

United Circles focuses on three networked I-US value chain demonstrators, each embedded in a Hub4Circularity and supported by governance frameworks, financing methodologies, digital tools, social and environmental innovation, and a material and products observatory.

Together they create a strong foundation for knowledge exchange and joint learning, especially in stakeholder engagement, governance mechanisms, and digital tools for tracking materials and products within circular hubs.
