THESEUS launches centralized water reuse activities at the Koropi-Peania WWTP

EYDAP and the Sanitary Engineering Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens have begun the centralized water reuse activities of the THESEUS project at the Koropi-Peania Wastewater Treatment Plant in Eastern Attica.

A recent visit by the two project teams marked the official start of the on-site work under Task 7.4. As part of the activity, treated wastewater from the plant will be used to irrigate a 1,500 m² agricultural demonstration field.

The demonstration will allow the partners to assess the use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation under real operating conditions. The work will examine its effects on crops and soil health, while also investigating potential environmental and health risks, including the fate of emerging contaminants and antibiotic resistance indicators. The findings will contribute to the development of the risk management approach required for water reuse.

This activity forms part of the THESEUS Water Symbiotic Flows pilot, which brings together centralized and decentralized solutions for recovering and reusing water across Attica. By generating practical evidence from the demonstration field, the project aims to support the safe and sustainable use of reclaimed water in agriculture, reduce pressure on freshwater resources and strengthen circular water management in the region.

With the groundwork now underway, the Koropi-Peania demonstration represents an important step towards translating the THESEUS water reuse approach into practice.
